Dining and Takeout: Match Restaurant Spend to the Right Card

What counts as dining for card rewards, from delivery apps to cafes inside other stores, and how much the dining category is worth on your real spend.

Updated

Dining is one of the most common bonus categories, and for many people it’s also one of the most expensive habits. Before you choose a card for it, check two things: what actually counts as dining, and how much the bonus is worth at your level of spending.

The cards and numbers in this guide are illustrative.

What counts as dining

Issuers usually include:

The edge cases are where people lose the bonus:

If a place matters to you, check your statement after your next visit to see how it coded.

What dining is worth at your spend

Compare Card A (4% on dining, 1% elsewhere) with Card B (a flat 2%):

Yearly dining spend Card A Card B Difference
$1,200 $48 $24 $24
$3,000 $120 $60 $60
$6,000 $240 $120 $120

At $100 a month, the dining bonus is worth about $2 a month over a flat-rate card. At $500 a month, it’s real money. Look at your own number before deciding the dining category deserves its own card.

Dining credits versus earn rates

Some cards offer dining credits: a fixed amount back each month or year at selected restaurants or apps. Credits aren’t the same as rewards:

Value a credit at what it saves you on spending you’d make regardless, not at its face value.

Dining abroad

If you eat out abroad, two more things matter:

Putting dining into your plan

Take your yearly dining spend from your spending plan. If the extra a dining card earns over your best everyday card is small, keep it simple and leave dining in “everything else”.

Common questions

Does food delivery count as dining? Often, but not always. It depends on how the delivery service is coded. Check a recent statement.

Do cafes inside supermarkets earn dining rewards? Usually not. They tend to code as the supermarket.

Are dining credits worth an annual fee? Only if you’d fully use them on spending you’d make anyway. Count them at that value, not face value.

Do bars count as restaurants? Many issuers treat bars as dining, but definitions differ. Check your card’s terms.
